Help. What is this Western Film?

I watched this film in the 80s on TV when I was a kid. I assume it was filmed in the early 70s. It was about a cowboy running away from a bunch of killers. He somehow acquired a horse to help him escape. The horse was suppose to be special. So he thought the horse was especially fast at out-running the killers. Turns out the horse cannot run. But what the horse can do was climb mountains and cover terrains where other horses cannot.

Can anyone name this film? It has been on my mind for years.
