I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore - Dark and funny Netflix film with a great central duo

Was browsing through Netflix and stumbled on this one. Didn't really know anything about it, so I just put it on and hoped for the best. And I was pleasantly surprised. Although the title may sound a bit off-putting and too quirky (“Never go full Sundance!”), the film itself is really great. Dark, twisted, funny, violent,... A solid debut for Macon Blair. As an actor he frequently works with Jeremy Saulnier ('Blue Ruin', 'Green Room') so you can really see his influences on the film.

I really love stories where one seemingly small event (in this case a burglary) leads to a clusterfuck of immense proportions, but most of the film is made by the lead actors. Elijah Wood shows off his comedy chops as Tony and Melanie Lynskey really knocked it out of the park as Ruth. It’s always great to see her taking the lead in indie flicks like these and with this performance she solidifies herself as one of my favorite actresses working today. But it’s really the chemistry between them that works great. The wackiness of Tony and the undercooled rage of Ruth really matches perfectly and makes this movie a fun ride.
