Why is the dialogue in Christopher Nolan films always so damn hard to hear?

I've been noticing this since The Prestige and it came to a head when I watched Dunkirk last night. I only ever manage to understand what is being said 50% of the time, it's even more grating when the films are so exposition-heavy.

Am I just going crazy? It's weird that these films with amazing sound effects and music have a hard time with dialogue.
