/r/Movies State of Affairs: Self Promotion and Spam

Hello everyone. In case you guys were not aware, 3 month ago, the admins decided to change the site's policy regarding spam and self promotion, meaning that it's now up to every subreddit to set up their own standards when it comes to these issues. /r/movies being a default sub with a large number of subscribers, as well as being a forum for a creative medium, is very prone to users wanting to self promote their content (most commonly it's video reviews and personal websites). As much as we love and encourage our users to submit their own hard earned work, let's go through this subreddit's standards of these submissions so your posts get approved:

  • If you're gonna self promote, only 1 out of every 5 submissions has to be self promotion: Pretty self explanatory.

  • You need to participate in /r/movies as a regular user: Don't just submit 4 random links just so you can circumvent the previous rule. You need to participate in other threads that have nothing to do with you.

  • Adhere to all of our other rules: They can be a minefield, but you get used to them soon enough.

  • This dank meme: If you do this, you might flag yourself for an immediate ban.

  • Always remember the classic Reddit quote: "It's cool to be a reddit account with a business, but it's not cool to be a business with a reddit account"

  • Selling stuff in this sub is prohibited under any circumstances: If your OC is a movie resource or a website that has ad revenue that's fine, but you can't ask for donations or traffic or PayPal or Bitcoin and if you are posting fan art you are not allowed to link to a source where any work is for sale.

  • If your OC is just repeated blogspam from bigger outlets, it will be removed: We've been getting this lately. Major film new sites will always take priority over smaller websites simply paraphrasing articles, even if you submit it before the original article gets submitted by someone else.

If you have any questions or doubts regarding your self promotion, we would really appreciate you sending us a message before you submit anything, not only this can prevent a removal/ban, but we can also point you to places where your content might be better suited.

I repeat, we encourage and appreciate your OC, but please be aware that there are rules that you need to follow first.

Since we're already here, we'd like to talk about some of the recent spam r/movies has been getting.

Some of you might have already noticed a YouTube channel called Supergenki Japan hijacking popular comments on popular posts to spam links to their videos. The way they do this, is that they reply to highly upvoted comments with a sort of relevant phrase, and then they proceed to drop their completely unrelated YouTube links. Be aware of these guys, and please report them as soon as you see them (some of you guys do it already and we really appreciate it). We're already working on ways to put a permanent stop to this channel's spamming, but until then, we're relying on you guys.

Another wave of spam comes from certain users submitting links to very shady image hosting websites (that usually end with the ".co" domain). These guys have actually been pretty successful because they always link to the train crash scene from The General (or other easily digestible movie material, but The General is a very common one), and they gather a large amount of upvotes. Please be aware of these users/websites, and report them as soon as you can.

Thank you for your time.
