Saw a Screening of The Disaster Artist
Thanks to Reddit I was able to attend a screening of The Room a couple of weeks ago and then the Disaster Artist last night. This was one of my most anticipated films and this just exceeded my expectations. The filmmakers did a fantastic job showcasing just how bizarre and fascinating the making of the one of the worst films ever made came to be. If you can, see this opening night in a packed auditorium. I'm usually crappy with writing reviews some of my thoughts (no spoilers):
James Franco absolutely disappeared into the role of Tommy Wiseau. Showing off every strange mannerism and personalty trait of Wiseau. If you took someone who never seen The Room and just showed them the scenes that were re-shot for the film, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
The supporting cast was amazing, Great performances all around from Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson, etc. Dave Franco as Greg was one of the biggest highlights and Seth Rogen as script advisory tearing into every horrible decision on the set just had me dying of laughter every time he opened his mouth.
The strongest aspect in the film was the relationship between Tommy and Greg (Dave Franco). It was little heartbreaking seeing their friendship unravel throughout the film.
The only thing that I was worried about going in was if they're just playing all for comedy. They did a fantastic job balancing the comedy and dramatic moments. There were time when I could hear some of the audience members at my showing getting choked up.
I also loved that they didn't just make Tommy Wiseua appear like the misunderstood hero and everyone else is getting in the way of his vision. They are plenty of scenes showing off just how much of a lunatic and an asshole he could be if someone got in his way.
If you had the seen The Room this film does answer so many questions about it. Such as "who the hell would finance this?" or "why is there is so many subplots that go absolutely nowhere?"
