What, in your opinion, are some of the biggest risks that a filmmaker or studio ever took with a movie that ended up paying off in a big way?

Did the movie kill off a beloved character? Did they cast a well known actor against type? Did they cast someone nobody had ever heard of in a key role? Was there a new technology for the special effects that no one had ever tried before? Was there a huge plot twist that might have alienated audiences?
