A Christmas Story makes me strangely uncomfortable

Anyone else get this vibe? I love the movie and it's absolutely hilarious and also full of many magical, more intimate moments. But something about it is just really surreal and lonely almost.. Sort of makes me sad. It's not even like I grew up in a similar time period or neighborhood (although I did obsess over and get a BB gun at least one year). Just something about the way it is shot or the dialogue just feels a little off and melancholy. Anyone else feel that?
