If Alfonso Cuaron wins Best Director at the Oscars, Mexican filmmakers will have won the award for 5 out of the last 6 years.
Roma was far and away my favorite movie last year, and it looks to be in the running for Best Picture, notable for a foreign language film.
Diving deeper into the awards race, I was amazed to realize that Mexican directors have been absolutely crushing it in Hollywood this decade. Since 2013, four of the five Best Director awards have been granted to three men:
2013 - Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity
2014 - Alejandro G. Inarittu for Birdman
2015 - Inarittu for The Revenant
2017 - Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water
Individually I adored each of these films, but hadn't realized how astounding it is for each to have been directed by a Mexican filmmaker in their second language! Roma is probably my favorite of the bunch (though Birdman stands alongside it neck-and-neck), and Cuaron has already won Best Director at the Golden Globes.
Don't really have a larger purpose to this post, but Mexico should be so proud of nurturing three of the greatest directors of our times, and I am happy the Academy is acknowledging their works.
