Notable Box Office Stories

• Angel Has Fallen - It's pretty telling how slow this weekend was that Angel Has Fallen became the first film in the Has Fallen saga to open at #1 and yet was still the worst opening of the franchise at $21.2M, just a hair under the $21.6M opening of previous entry London Has Fallen. This was in fact the worst weekend of the summer, which is actually par for the course for this time of year. We are stuck in the doldrums folks and what you get is strange film choices that just couldn't find a good spot anywhere else. And with It: Part 2 still two weekends away, expect things to get even more dire next weekend. As for now, Angel Has Fallen has secured itself as one of the more odd film trilogies. The series origins alone are strange, as Olympus Has Fallen was a direct response to another white house in peril movie White House Down but came in with half the budget first and crushed that film's chances. Yet shockingly it didn't end there as it began something of a Gerard trash renaissance with other masterpieces like Den of Thieves and Geostorm.
• Angel Has Fallen (cont.) - Now the good sir is leaving us and taking his xenophobia and bad one liners with him. Not even sure what to make of the Has Fallen series at its deathbed. It's a relic of a different time, a clear Die Hard rip-off that channels the muscle bound action flicks of the 80s with a guy who's going for more of a dad bod look. With most modern action films now chasing the style of John Wick, it's shocking that this franchise found the purchase it did, even with its reasonable $40M budget. The film will do what these films always do, make enough domestic and sell the hell out of overseas pre-sales and make a quick buck. But as for legacy I don't think we'll be hearing about the nostalgic Has Fallen reboot any time soon.
• Overcomer - It wouldn't be a wonky weekend without a Christian inspirational film trying to fill that void. This time it's Overcomer, a rather sweaty title that managed a pretty solid #3 opening with $8.2M. The film comes from the Kendrick Brothers (Alex and Steve) who are something of the James Cameron of Christian themed inspirational dramas with big hits (for their genre) like Fireproof and War Room. This one in particular is trying to go for that War Room wild success, as that film similarly opened at #2 in late August of 2015 and actually managed to go up to #1 the following weekend. That $3M film ended its run with $67M, a pretty damn good haul by any metrics.
• Overcomer (cont.) -This time though it feels like Kendricks are making this straight for their audience in an attempt for a massive hit. This is an inspirational sports movie about Christian value where the inciting incident is an industrial plant closing. If that's not an attempt to hit at all the heartstrings of small town America, I don't know what is. However Overcomer is coming in under the $11M opening of War Room and the competition is much harder than that film. Not next weekend (which is such a ghost land I'll probably just skip it) but of course the week after with It 2: Hyper-Clown taking up all the oxygen. Of course this is an appeal directly to a specific audience that tends to not see spooky clown adventure films so I expect while not making War Room money, this will end up making a solid profit from an audience that continues to support these films in the theaters,
• Ready or Not - Man horror is just so damn unpredictable. While established brands like Jordan Peele and Steven King still reign, the random unique horror premise can still find a place in the right circumstances. But sometimes you are Ready or Not, which despite solid reviews and a good hook opened to a pretty bad #6 with $7.5M Now of course I must point out that A) this film only cost $6M to make and B) the film opened on Wednesday and the full five day haul is $10.5M. Still not making it into the top ten in such a dull quiet weekend is a bad sign and normally this would be rough news for Fox Searchlight that produced this film hoping they could create an out-of-the-park hit to help offset smaller more artsy projects that have not performed as well. However since the pitch meeting and now Fox Searchlight has been consumed Akira style into Disney and is nothing more than a pulsating flesh pouch on those corporate ledgers. So Ready or Not is yet another weird Disney unwanted stepchild so not much impact will be had from this low opening outside of probably everyone not get properly paid, but that happens even when a film is a hit so yay Hollywood!
