"Chronicle" (2012) could have been a solid start, to a great superhero/villain trilogy or series.

This movie did so many things right, and only a few wrong. It was the first "superhero" movie that for me, felt more real than fantasy. There were consequences, people died, and shit got dark.

It was imo, an accurate portrayal of what might happen if some young kids were suddenly bestowed with superpowers. No kid would be prepared for that, and things might go south fast. Throw in some social anxiety, depression, or just teenage awkwardness/angst and that's a recipe for disaster.

I really loved how they made the characters understand that they couldn't just do whatever they wanted, even though one did anyways. The cinematography was great, and the special effects were not bad at all for 2012.

My only complaint about the movie, is that we didn't get really any understanding of the source of their powers. All we know is that it was like a meteorite, or something obviously alien in origin. It would've been cool to see where it came from, or what it came from. It seems as if it was sent to Earth on purpose, as kind of a "let's see what happens when we give these monkeys power" test.

Anyway, I think it was a solid movie, and could've been a great trilogy, if the antagonist hadn't died at the end. They could've explored the other kids trying to stop this mega villain, or even the government getting involved to stop him. Although, I guess that's pretty much Akira. 🤷🏽‍♂️
