I loved every motherf***ing minute of Dolemite Is My Name.

Just a bummer to watch it on Netflix because it turns out to be a celebration of the movie theater experience. Popcorn, the big flashy marquee, a packed house with hundreds of people screaming and laughing.

Before we even see Eddie Murphy's face, we hear him say four 'motherfucker's, and we know the old Eddie Murphy is back. Big time. It's obvious that Eddie has a lot of love for Rudy Ray Moore, and he makes it look so easy to capture both the bombastic crowd-pleasing showman and the relatable, self-doubting but utterly determined human being that Rudy Ray Moore was.

"Rudy, you think I wanted to be a DJ at a used records store? Our dreams don't always come true, brother."

"They still can."

I'm always a sucker for movies about making movies, and The Disaster Artist left me disappointed with how often it just screeched to a halt to explain a joke. This movie didn't do any of that. We just witness the chaotic, slapdash production of Dolemite and the funny comes naturally. Nobody knows what the hell they're doing on this set. But they're a team, and they're going to make a movie. This is where Wesley Snipes shines especially, as the eternally flustered D'Urville Martin who directed and acted in the production.

"Is there any angle you can shoot this where it looks like he's actually kicking him?"

"...........there's no such angle."

The scene where Rudy finally gets to premiere his movie and watches the entire crowd go crazy for it was just the cherry on top.

In that moment, nothing else mattered. Fuck debt. Fuck losing his record royalties. Fuck every no-business-born insecure motherfucker who ever doubted him. The world was loving his movie. He'd won.

"Rudy, I'm a little confused. Is this movie supposed to be funny? I was thinking it was going to be a Shaft kinda thing."

"Of course it's supposed to be funny! They get it, that's why they're laughing! See, it's comedy, and it's sexy and it's action! It's a total entertainment experience!"
