Sometimes an actors career can be completely redefined when they are given the opportunity to play against their very defined type.

The most obvious example of this is Heath Ledger playing The Joker. I doubt there was a single person on the planet other than the actual filmmakers that cast him that had any expectation he would deliver the performance he did. His casting couldn’t of been more against type but it resulted in one of the most iconic performances in cinema.

What are other examples of great cast against type performances?

On the flip side there are other examples of cast against type performances that seem just as baffling on paper but unlike the above example did not pay off at all. For example Ralph Fiennes in Maid In Manhattan. Brilliant actor defined by his dark and brooding roles cast against type as the romantic lead in a light and breezy comedy. The result is a hilariously awkward performance where you are expecting Mr Fiennes to end up burying Jennifer Lopez in his garden rather than sweeping her off her feet.
