The Adventures of Tintin is one of the best adventure films ever made and it's a shame it never got a sequel!

The fact that Hollywood was able to make a masterpiece like this and still hasn't made a sequel is criminal.. Let me please remind you how good it was.

Who made the film:

Let's start by just naming a few people who helped bringing this film to life: Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, John Williams, Stephen Moffat, Edgar Wright. This is basically already meant to be legendary, but it gets even better!! On top of that they casted Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. An absolute spectacular cast!

The story:

It's the perfect adventure film: A journalist travels around the world to unravel the secret of the unicorn. He visit exotic locations, meets a lot of (strange) people and the story is one big mystery! There is great action, hilarious humour and it's all in all a lot of fun!

The visuals:

This film was shot using motion capture. At the time many Tintin fans weren't really happy with that idea because most motion capture films just didn't look good. There were some exceptions, but most looked bland. Tintin however didn't. They went all out on this one and it shows! And don't even get me started on those scene transitions... They are some of the best I've ever seen! If this film would come out today instead ot 10 years ago, no one would even notice. It is truely timeless!

But was it succesful?

Yes, this film was successful... It made 375 million dollars in the box office and critics and viewers seem to really praise it.

My thoughts as a Belgian:

The Idea of Hollywood making a Tintin film was scary. Our little Belgian country already witnessed how Hollywood absolutely butchered the Smurfs. And Tintin is our pride and joy of bande dessinée. So when the film came out, most of us were really happy and relieved. For once, Hollywood made a film even Hergé would be proud of. Okay it wasn't as canon as it could be, but it captured the soul of a Tintin comic way more then Hollywood ever did with the Smurfs. This film made us Belgians feel proud. This normally only happens when our Red Devils play football/soccer. Other than that most of us never truely feel 'Belgian'.

Final thoughts:

First if all. This film deserved an Oscar. The visuals where great, the music was beautiful, the story was amazing. The acting was sublime... It's a 10/10.

Second of all I don't know what happend to the sequel? Hollywood had the perfect team and cast to make a succesful franchise out of a really successful film. There are enough adventures and characters to bring to the big screen. The world loves Tintin and it has everything a film could ever want and the team adored working on it. It's a shame the promised sequel got stuck in Development Hell.

But maybe it's just for the better... We have one masterpiece and the treatment that Tintin got was way better than what the Smurfs got. When the first one came out, it felt like they stabbed Belgium in its heart. When the second one came out, Hollywood just stabbed us again like we weren't already hurt enough. Apparently they made a third film and are making a 4th one and I don't think many Belgian people know, tbf we don't really want to know either. It's a dead horse already. So maybe we are just lucky to have our one Tintin film.

So if you are bored this weekend, maybe you should treat yourself with some Belgian Fries, a Belgian beer and give The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of The Unicorn a (re)watch!
