Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow (1999) is an amazingly creepy thriller and an absolutely perfect Halloween movie.

I can’t get over how many people I come across that have either dismissed this movie or have straight up never seen it at all.

I think this is Tim Burton’s last truly great film. It’s a perfect storm of creative talent (that includes Francis Ford Coppola producing, Andrew Kevin Walker writing, Emmanuel Lubezki as the cinematographer, Danny Elfman scoring, etc.) and a powerhouse of some really delightful performances of top notch character actors (including Johnny Depp).

The approach to this was making it a mystery/thriller over a horror movie and it works so well. The atmosphere and mannerisms of Depp’s Crane almost makes it a Sherlock Holmes whodunnit that slowly and subtly weaves in some majorly creepy and horrific story elements. The production design and music are just incredible and really pull the whole film together.

I always use Sleepy Hollow as an example of a complete mastery over tone in a movie. All involved knew exactly what kind of film they were making and made creative decisions to get to that point.

Watch Sleepy Hollow this Halloween season.
