Hard Boiled. John Woo makes gun battles feel like sword fights.

I’ve heard mixed opinions on John Woo’s work. Most negative things I’ve heard are “they never reload”, “why do they miss so often”, and “the guns shoot fireworks”. The thing I’ve always wondered is why do people take action movies with guns so seriously? Yet, when movies such as crouching tiger hidden dragon. The characters fly though the air, and swords constantly make a SWOOSH sound. It’s no problem because that’s the style . What I feel John Woo was trying to do was meld the old school Hong Kong Action with modern characters and weapons. In no movie is this more apparent than in Hard Boiled. The gun fights in Hard Boiled feel like a true duel. Constant movement, cleaver angles of attack, and an active tempo of Parry/Repost. Gun fights in movies to often get bogged down realities of guns. John Wick makes this interesting, but even then It’s more about the hand to hand stuff. The gun play just feels like, point and shoot. Hard boiled just throws all reality away, and makes the choreography the center of the action. Idk if this makes any sense. Just trying to flesh out the idea. Would love your feed back.
