What do you think is the greatest success story of a film that was stuck in development hell?

The question came to me as I was reading about the strong weekend that Sonic 2 had - even stronger than the original. Looking into the first movie (which I admittedly haven't seen but I love and grew up with the characters), I realized that development for a Sonic movie began nearly 30 years ago. I think the fact that it finally escaped development hell and became a successful film franchise (based on a video game, no less) is pretty awesome!
