Just rewatched Paris is Burning (1990) and what I can say is this is one of the best (and most tragic) documentaries on queer culture out there.

Filmed over 7 years, this doc focuses on various members of New York City's "Ball" scene in the 1980s, where gay/queer people come together and compete in highly stylized pageants. I originally thought this was solely gonna be about drag queens but it goes way beyond that, showcasing a wide variety of people competing for highly stylized pageants.

I was surprised at how moved I was by it all. These are a group of people who were ostracized by their families and the rest of society but came together to form their own and find their own happiness. The entire film is made even more tragic by the fact that pretty much everybody in this documentary died soon after.

The ending in particular broke my heart, and effectively shows how horrid the world has, and continues to treat them.
