You People (2023)

Sadly, this is definitely one of the most disappointing films I’ve seen so far this year.

Despite the amazing cast consisting of Jonah Hill, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Duchovny, Taco, and Eddie Murphy, it just wasn’t enough to save this one for me.

This film’s goal is clearly to shove a message down your throat and less on making an entertaining, relatable, funny love story. The film has it’s comedic moments, but there were times where I considered turning this one off.

In regards to the film’s message, it has about as much subtlety as a battering ram. The dialogue feels forced, clunky and awkward(not in the good way). These characters come off as caricatures of what the filmmakers wanted to portray, rather than real people, this is not how real people talk and behave. The characters in this movie were just unlikeable and at times unbearable.

A film can convey a deeper message and provide relevant social commentary, while at the same time being entertaining, funny and charming. Unfortunately the filmmakers were more focused on the message and less on making an entertaining film that audiences can relate to and connect with.

This was one of my more anticipated films this year. When I saw the trailer and cast I was hyped up! But sadly the end result was a painful, awkward mess of a film that failed to utilize the strength of it’s talented cast. I would not recommend this film to anyone. I’d give this a 3/10
