Kubo and the Two Strings, a great story for boys

There are many modern examples of female characters in kids movies that buck traditional gender traits of being damsels in distress for being strong, smart, independent warrior types. In response to this broadening of traditional gender roles for female characters, there are not as many three-dimesional male characters that can exhibit, in addition to heroism, less "masculine" traits like care & empathy, creativity and playfulness.

Enter Kubo and the Two Strings. Off the bat Kubo is a caretaker of his mother. He is a story teller and an artist. He is a playful boy. He doesn't always listen to his mother, and pays the consequences as the result. His relationship with Monkey (his mother) teaches him to exercise his intelligence and be mindul and cautious of the world, and his relationship with Beetle (his father) encourages him to be brave, risk-taking and selfless toward others.

Through combing both parents' ideologies, he grows into a hero by ultimately allowing his compassion and love to serve as his weapon to protect others.
