the death of stalin is this generation's doctor strangelove.

in my opinion, 2017's the death of stalin is this generation's doctor strangelove. the two films really do have many similarities. it takes a bunch of talented and beloved actors and puts them in a comedic movie about extremely dark subject matter that is also a satirical look at government. also, both films heavily feature improv and both films prominently feature russian characters. but the big thing is that both films were extremely timely. doctor strangelove was a comedic film about the cold war and potential nuclear holocaust, both of which were heavy on america's mind at the time. and even though the death of stalin takes place in the 1950s, it's hard to not view it's themes of political corruption as timely when you remember that the film came out a mere year after trump was elected president.

often you'll hear critics say "[insert recently released and popular movie here] is this generation's [insert iconic and beloved movie here]". and more often then not, you will likely be left questioning why exactly critics think that way beyond a few vague similarities. however, i truly do believe that the death of stalin is this generation's answer to doctor strangelove. i'd even go so far as to say that it's almost a spiritual successor.

or if you disagree with me, perhaps you might look to 2009's in the loop(which is by the same director) which is so on the nose about it's doctor strangelove influence that one of the posters was even modeled after doctor strangelove's poster.
