What are your thoughts on Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (2005) starring Tom Cruise?

Recently rewatched this movie and if I remember correctly it was overshadowed with Tom Cruise acting very erratic on the press tour. However the score (John Williams) is very powerful, imagery and special effects are all stellar, although the characterization of some characters can be a little goofy or over the top (Tim Robbins) and the pacing feels off ( how long a period of time has passed from the first rising of the alien crafts to the end of the film?). Overall I viewed it more fondly the second time compared to my original viewing way back. Anyone else have thoughts on this film?
