Film critics are really misunderstood on this subreddit but also by people in general

There's this weird thing that happens every time a blockbuster movie comes out and the critics reviews come out

If the reviews for a blockbuster are negative, redditors will say things like "these reviews from critics seem really harsh, its a blockbuster, of course its not trying to be some cinematic masterpiece like Citizen Kane or Casablanca"

Or they'll say "critics are just pretentious, the movie is probably good if you turn your brain off and don't think about it too hard"

But everyone forgets that Face/Off, the Nicolas Cage and John Travolta action movie, received rave reviews from film critics

It has an 82/100 rating on Metacritic from critics reviews and the plot is insanely silly and the epitome of a "turn your brain off" action movie

Critics also love Borat, it has an 89/100 Metascore and received critics prizes when it came out

And yet it features a scene where two naked men have a fight where one of them ends up trapped under the other man's ballsack unable to breathe

And yet critics love it

So why do people think critics are not democratic in their movie tastes?

Critics judge every movie against what its attempting and if a movie gets bad reviews, it's probably because critics thought that it wasn't even a good version of what it's attempting to be
