Mind-boggled by casting choices for the upcoming Golden State Killer film.

TIL that Vincent Gallo and James Franco have both been cast in Jordan Gertner's upcoming film about the Golden State Killer, Joseph James DeAngelo, with Gallo playing the role of DeAngelo and apparently leading the freaking casting room (which, according to RS, has been a complete dumpster fire of a scenario with 2 actors bringing complaints to the SAG already):

"In one complaint filed to SAG obtained by Rolling Stone, Jane said she attended a callback to play a female victim who was violently r\ped and psychologically tortured by DeAngelo’s character. Jane said she was told the role required full nudity, which she was willing to do. But when she walked into the audition and met Gallo, he talked about what she called his “torture p*rn fantasies” with the actress and told her the script, “would bear very little resemblance to what was going to be filmed,” according to the complaint."*

Is anyone else completely appalled by the casting choices of Gallo and Franco?? One of the biggest ethical issues with films and television shows about true crime is that they too often end up being seriously exploitative of the real life victims, and they've cast 2 men (and given 1 significant amounts of power in the production of this film) who've gained fairly notorious reputations for being exploitative of women in real life.

I know Gertner worked with Gallo on the production of Buffalo '66, so obviously there's a pre-existing relationship between them, but I don't think I could conjure up a more disrespectful way to tell the story of at least 13 murdered women (and dozens more SA victims) than choosing to bring Vincent Gallo and James Franco onto the project.
