The atmosphere and depth of Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong are yet to be rivaled by any monster film reboots, and the CGI still maintains fidelity.

Nobody can convince me that the bug swamp scene doesn't send chills to their core with how REAL it seems, down to the sounds, in a fantasy Carboniferous setting with huge bugs that is. Or that Kong fighting the 3 Tyrannosaurus Rexes at once was executed flawlessly as a smooth, drawn out slugging contest that even with today's CGI is hard to achieve.

Compare King Kong to some of the not-too-recent Marvel releases or Warcraft that was nearly full CGI for its entire runtime. It's like the Kong movie from 2005 was sent back in time with better technology...or just a diligent, passionate post production team.

For the entire runtime of King Kong (2005) until they leave the island at least I feel entrenched in a horrific ordeal with the group that embarks onto the island. It's quite poignant by the point that the optimistic group limps back to their ship, Kong in tow. Many characters were certainly not fleshed out but the ones that mattered were. Making the conflict between the armed men and Kong/Ann in their beauty and the beast romance heartbreaking, because as the viewer you don't want anyone harmed, including Kong.

What adds another layer to the movie are just the beautiful, simple scenes like Ann dancing for Kong or when they spin on the frozen pond in NYC to the piano. A few minutes of peace in an otherwise chaotic, violent film to bring a modicum of balance to it.
