Why were the 90s such a golden era for thriller movies?

So many great films in this genre, including Silence of the Lambs, The Usual Suspects, Final Analysis, Seven, Fight Club, etc. Was there something in particular about the 90s that was conducive to thrillers? Or was it a case of a few successful films making it big and studios rushing to copy the formula?
