What sequel is actually a great stand-alone movie in and of itself?

I'm thinking something like The Dark Knight. A great movie, having almost nothing to do with the first part, that is coincidentally a sequel.

I know this might be slightly controversial, but Back to the Future II is my favorite of the series, as well. There's something about watching that hovercraft that just brings up memories of when I used to watch that movie with my dad with the exhilaration and hope that one day I would be able to ride a skateboard that floats that just makes BBTF2 my favorite.
