[Recommendation] "Sorcerer" (1977) -- Buried one week after the release of Star Wars, was William Friedkin's self-proclaimed masterpiece. A white knuckle thriller starring Roy Scheider.

Haven't seen this film mentioned before but this is one of the great thrillers of the 70's. The story centers on a small shit hole town in South America. A wild west sort of place that attracts low lives with no where else to go who work as day laborers for an oil company. When the derrick blows, the company needs 4 drivers to transport unstable dynamite through the rainforrest on what is a near suicide mission. 4 desperate fugitives from different parts of the globe see the job as a last chance to make it and jump at the opportunity.

The film is a slow burn, taking its time to set up the main characters' back stories - Roy Scheider is wheelman on the run after a mob stick up gone wrong. There's a Palestinian terrorist hiding from the Mossaud, a disgraced French banker and mysterious con man.

There are 2 absolutely gripping sequences in this film that would never be done practically in this day and age and will have you on the edge of your seat. This really is pure cinematic film making and hits that sweet spot of artistic vision and genre thrills that I personally love.

The film has had something of a critical re-evaluation over the years but audiences don't seem to know much about it. It'd be great if this became widely known as the mini-masterpiece it is and was discussed more. Truly worth a watch.
