The Big Lebowski Theory

I was rewatching The Big Lebowski and something dawned on me. “The Stranger” AKA the Cowboy played by Sam Elliot, potentially could be The Dude’s guardian angel.

This is what we know about “The Stranger”:

He’s always by himself

He’s only seen at the Bowling Alley, but is never seen bowling, only seemingly sitting at the Bar waiting for The Dude.

In his only appearance in the film, he gives the Dude some advice that’s actually pretty helpful and wise. And it comes at the most stressful and eventful time in the Dude’s life.

While talking to the Dude, he says “I like your style.” Which, let’s be honest, as much as I love the Dude, most people would consider him a deadbeat in real life, unless they had a special connection to him(I.e. Guardian Angel.)

He seems to know a lot about the Dude, even his real name, even though Dude knows seemingly nothing about The Stranger.

He also serves as the narrator of the film and says the line

“They call Los Angeles the "City Of Angels." I didn't find it to be that, exactly. “

Now I’m probably reading too much into all this, but if there was ever a man cool enough to be The Dude’s guardian angel, it’s Sam Elliot.
