Sneakers (1992) is THE best hacking movie of all time

A reasonable story matched with an AMAZING cast makes Sneakers great movie. It was never a huge box office hit, but I think it’s a perfect thriller with a huge IT/nerd bent. A movie about “hacking” in 1992 that is extraordinarily accessible to alll.

It’s smart, thoughtful, full of suspense. While the actual hacking is dubious, the “crew” actually uses a lot more social engineering than straight hackign to achieve their hacks. So while the technology is a cute from a 2020 stand point the movie never needs to stand on its hacking creds. These are people using all their intelligence to overcome problems. There’s no Mission Impossible amazing stunts or mask devices here.

The cast is amazing.

  • Redford leads the movie as only he can. Cool and sophisticated
  • Ben freaking Kingsley as the ultimate hidden hand bad guy. He’s not even screen until halfway through the movie and only has a handful of scenes but with Redford It’s an amazing combo
  • Dan Aykroyd is the ultimate nerd, just loving every minute and occasionally stealing a moment but he never overpowers a scene.
  • David Strathairn as the blind guy keeping it understated in a sea of talent
  • River Phoenix as “the kid” showing us a hint of what could have been
  • Mary MacDonald proving that female love interests don’t need to be bimbos. Here’s to smart ladies holding their own
  • Stephen Tobolowsky get more than his famous “Groundhog day” scene and nails the awkward nerdy genius

Plus did I mention Sydney Poitier as the gruff ex-CIA agent. He smashes this. His presence is electric. It may not have been award winning but I think he shows just how commanding he can be. it’s my personal favourite Poitier performance.

If you’ve never seen Sneakers your in for a treat. Think original Mission Impossible, with more fun. A 90s version of Oceans 11 without needing the glow and glamour of a Los Vegas back drop.

A completely stand alone film that quickly establishes an entire world with fleshed our characters. It could have a sequel. prequel and TV spinoff but it would never be as good as the original.

This movie shows that hacking movies are all about the cast and the story and nothing to do with technology. It’s endlessly enjoyable. Beautifully directed. Great pacing, exactly where it needs to be at the right time. It never dumbs itself down but if feels amazingly accessible.

This is a masterpiece of cinema. Sit back enjoy the ride. There’s no huge twist, it’s slightly formulaic but smenjoy a stella cast at the height of thier respective careers being genuinely amazing. This is ensemble carts showing how to assemble.

I love ALL these character but if they try to do anything with this story it just won’t be the same. Genuine lightning in a bottle

Oh and James Earl Jones might make a small appearance just to not feel left out.

If this movie was made today it would be memes and gifs of it to the cows come home.

“When you get the box you give us geography lessons , until then this man goes to goes to Tahiti”

10/10 will watch and post about it again
