Although Terminator 2 is definitely a great movie, the first Terminator film is one that really delves into the horror element of the series.

The whole idea that you are being hunted by something that is so unhuman, something so out of this world and something that cannot/should exist yet and will not stop until it accomplishes the mission, that is something that will make you feel truly vulnerable as a human being.

It really captures the whole unhuman element of the Terminator and how its role fits with the name, similar to how Reese says the famous line "It cannot be reasoned with. It cannot be bargained with".

It truly makes the Terminator is incredibly monstrous, it cannot be stopped or destroyed and its aim is to accomplish its mission at all costs and the humans have to use whatever wits and spirit and resources that they can muster to kill this one monster.

Now imagine how a whole army of these monsters would be in the future.

And not only that, but the whole idea of killing the mother of John Connor instead of John Connor himself reinforces the legendary status of the name John Connor.

We do not know what he looks like or how he is like so it is left up to us to figure it out.
