I watched all of Georges Méliès’ (the director of 'A Trip to the Moon') surviving films and here are the shorts I highly recommend.
I made a list of all Georges Méliès’s surviving and a few fragment (a small part broken off or separated from something) films (here's the link: https://letterboxd.com/prolelol/list/georges-melies-surviving-films/). Méliès made over 520 films, about over 210 of which survive today and I watched all of them. Here are the shorts I highly recommend:
A masterpieces (10/10):
-
The Impossible Voyage (1904) - It’s like a ‘sunny’ version of A Trip to The Moon, but didn't get enough viewings like A Trip to the Moon. I loved it in every way, it feels so artsy and its effects and comedy are still very much well executed as well.
-
A Trip to the Moon (1902) - Just a brilliant and one of the most iconic shorts of all-time.
Highly recommend (9/10):
-
The Man with the Rubber Head (1901) - It actually put on my smile. Such a genius and funny short!
-
The Astronomer’s Dream (1898) - It's the original version of A Trip to the Moon. An entertaining film, and some pretty cool effects too.
-
The Fat and Lean Wrestling Match (1900)
-
The Diabolic Tenant (1909)
-
The Witch (1906)
-
The Palace of the Arabian Nights (1905)
-
The Terrible Turkish Executioner (1904) - Not anything special, but it was terrifying and kind of shocking.
-
The Infernal Cauldron (1903)
-
The Kingdom of the Fairies (1903)
-
Gulliver’s Travels Among the Lilliputians and the Giants (1902)
-
Joan of Arc (1900)
Great shorts that I recommend (8/10):
-
The Conquest of the Pole (1912) - The longest-running and last 'great' film made by Méliès.
-
The Untameable Whiskers (1904)
-
Cinderella (1899)
-
The Four Troublesome Heads (1898)
-
The Haunted Castle (1896)
-
A Terrible Night (1896)
-
The Magic Book (1900)
-
The Christmas Dream (1900)
-
A Fantastical Meal (1900)
-
The Devil and the Statue (1901)
-
The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1903) - There exists a 12-minute hand-colored print of the original 15-minute film out there, but I’ve only been able to find one that runs about three minutes. The sets are impressive though.
-
The Monster (1903)
-
The Wandering Jew (1904)
-
The Christmas Angel (1904)
-
Satan in Prison (1907)
-
In the Bogie Man’s Cave (1908)
-
The Knight of the Snow (1912)
-
The Living Playing Cards (1905)
-
The Legend of Rip Van Winkle (1905)
-
Inventor Crazybrains and His Wonderful Airship (1906)
-
The Hilarious Posters (1906)
-
The Eclipse: Courtship of the Sun and Moon (1907)
A solid 7/10 that I think people still should watch it:
-
The Merry Frolics of Satan (1906)
-
The Black Imp (1905)
-
The Mermaid (1904)
-
The Melomaniac (1903)
-
The Prince of Magicians (1901)
-
The One-Man Band (1900)
-
The Haunted Castle (1897)
-
The Pillar of Fire (1899)
6/10 that everyone loves it, but I thought it was okay:
-
A Nightmare (1896)
-
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1907)
My ratings:
10/10: 2 shorts
9/10: 11 shorts
8/10: 37 shorts
7/10: 73 shorts
6/10: 44 shorts
5/10: 23 shorts
4/10: 12 shorts
3/10: 6 shorts
I watched all of them on Youtube, the only A Trip to the Moon I watched is in 4k, includes the colorized version.
Have a nice Sunday! :)
