We mods are in this subreddit daily and know the users feel like the same movies are talked about way too often. The most popular movies on Reddit are certainly some great ones, but every week we're going to recommend what we think are good movies and aren't discussed much in this subreddit. These recommendations aren't all pretentious film school meditations on human verisimilitude, we swear they're watchable :)
January 15, 2021 is A Bittersweet Life - 2005.
Trailer. (Don't bother watching it. It's garbage and gives a lot away.)
The basic premise: A man working within the mob loses everything when he doesn't obey his boss's order.
I saw the Devil has been a talking point on the subreddit in the last month or so, and I thought it fitting to introduce people to the earlier work of director Jee-woon Kim and leading actor Lee Byung-hun. A Bittersweet Life received 5 awards and 7 additional nominations among various film awards shows and festivals during its run. Yet it's barely discussed on r/movies. Let's change that.
I first saw A Bittersweet Life sometime back in 2012. I picked it up as one of those real quick birthday gifts without putting too much thought into it. I had read the synopsis, liked the sound of it, and knew it'd be fit for purpose as the guy it was for was just getting into International Cinema. Safe bet.
Well I ended up watching it with him, and I absolutely loved it. It dances between genres a little and while it's singular and predictable in scope, how it gets to that point, and then the final execution, are both fantastic!
The film brings to the table comedy, a visceral and edge-of-your-seat fight-scene, and beautiful cinematography to deliver an often told but seldom mastered story. Yes the story itself is cliché, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a better execution of it than this one.
