Game Night is one of the best modern comedies of all time

Honestly, I adore this movie so much, mainly because it subverts what an R rated comedy is and it doesn't include many tropes that have plagued them in the past few years. Most "adult comedies" are filled to the brim with nudity, sex references and whatever else they throw in to try and appeal to adults when in reality the jokes are very childish and appeal to young teenagers only.

Game Night looked like it would have fallen into that category with directors John Daley and John Goldstein waiting and directing that terrible Vacation reboot which fell into most if not all of the traps that I listed above which really put some caution on this movie, the movie also has 7 main characters and 3 antagonists so this movie could have turned out to be 1hr 40mins of jokes loosely connected by a thin and poorly done plot.

However, this movie turned out to be the exact opposite, the plot is a well-executed mystery/thriller with really clever verbal and visual jokes. Daley and Goldstein put Edgar Wright levels of effort into directing with the camerawork and cinematography adding to jokes instead of just actors doing improv in front of a camera (the egg scene being a standout.) The cast all bring their A-game with each pair of stars (Bateman and McAdams, Magnussen and Horgan, Morris and Bunbury) all bouncing off each other well and each having their own sub-plots going on and Jesse Plemons performance is a standout that should have gotten Oscar attention (no I am serious.) The film contains little to no lowbrow r-rated comes humour which is great to see.

I would love nothing more than a sequel to this film and if you haven't seen it then go and watch it!
