Has self referential/meta comedy completely killed the Parody movie?

The old phrase “they don’t make them like this anymore” just hit me rewatching Airplane in that they literally don’t make them any more. Parody movies are extinct.

I can only assume it’s for one of two reasons. A) the style was just completely worn out. After Scary, Date, Superhero, Disaster, Epic movie, Meet the Spartans and then some even more godawful low budget ones such as The Hungover Games and Vampires Suck. It completely destroyed any desire to watch these kinds of films. It became synonymous with terrible, lowest common denominator comedy basically one tier above porn productions.

B) Movies are so meta and self referential today that they get to the jokes before any parody can. A lot of movies use lampshading, the last two phases of the MCU basically scream in your face “this is all a bit silly isn’t it?” And then you have movies like Aquaman, The Flash and the new Indy where the tones are so all over the place that you’re not even sure whether to take the film seriously that you’re watching.

People forget parody movies were actually clever and well made. And I would love to see a return to one made with passion and care. Airplane, Hot Shots 1 and Deux, Young Frankenstein, Scary Movie 1 and 2 and Balck Dynamite are some of my favourite comedies, does anyone else want to see another sincere attempt at a parody? I actually think a parody of all the A24 horror style movies would work incredibly today if someone took a shot at it.
