Who Framed Roger Rabbit is incredibly impressive from an artistic standpoint

The way that the toons interact with the real people is incredible for a movie from 1988. They managed to nail the eyelines between the toons and humans (something The Sound of Music really messed up on), and things like Roger grabbing on to Valiant's coat, breaking dishes over his head, spitting real water out of his mouth etc are so well done.

I looked up a behind the scenes video after watching and was amazed how they built little robots for things like the baby holding the cigar, the dish breaking bit etc and then drew the cartoons over it in post.

The most impressive thing was the "bumping the lamp" scene, where Valiant bumps his head on a lamp for the SOLE PURPOSE of making the artists have to do complicated lighting on roger for like an entire minute of footage, as a light bounced back and forth through the room, doing this kind of lighting and shadow and keeping it consistent with the live actors is an incredible achievement for 1988 or even now.

This was all done with ZERO computers, I highly suggest watching it if only to marvel at the artist wizardry on display. Here's a great video breaking down how they nailed the artwork for this movie - https://youtu.be/RWtt3Tmnij4
