‘The Wrestler’ is Aronofsky’s finest film

I realize at this point that Darren Aronofsky has turned fairly divisive to say the least as of late but viewing this movie again after several years hit me in a profound way. There is such brutal realism throughout anchored by Mickey Rourke’s staggering performance that puts you right in there every step of the way with a deeply flawed man. Aronofsky uses a certain filming technique that involves shooting Rourke from right behind consistently that is so effective in an almost trance like view of a character that you want to root for but also feel so much sadness and anger too. I think this is when Aronofsky is at his best, just letting the actors carry the film and letting the scene breathe. He seems to get in trouble when he tries to do much (ie The Fountain, Noah). He really does have a masterful eye for character studies and I hope he continues to pursue similar projects.
