What happened to "one for them, one for me" from filmmakers?

“One for them, one for me.” It’s a Hollywood mantra, most often attributed to director Martin Scorsese, that you occasionally hear referenced by filmmakers when they discuss how they balance making movies that are designed to be big-budget, four-quadrant blockbusters & using the clout from those to get smaller, more personal films or original big budget projects in case of Christopher Nolan funded. Directors who successfully did that include-

  • Christopher Nolan:- BB->The Prestige, TDK->Inception, TDKR->Interstellar
  • Rian Johnson:- TLJ->Knives Out
  • Taika Waititi:- Ragnarok->Jojo Rabbit, Love and Thunder->Next Goal Wins
  • James Wan:- Aquaman-> Malignant
  • Joseph Kosinski:- Top Gun:Maverick-> Spiderhead(say what you will about the quality of this one)
  • Colin Trevorrow:- Jurassic World->The Book of Henry(say what you will about the quality of this one)
  • Russo Bros:- Avengers:Endgame->Cherry(say what you will about the quality of this one)

But a lot of directors went way overboard with doing just IP movies:-

  • It's been a decade since Ryan Coogler's last non IP based movie Fruitvale Station. He has zero original projects on the horizon that we know of.
  • It's been 13 years since James Gunn's last non IP movie Super.
  • It's been 12 years since J.J. Abrams's last original project Super 8.
  • It's been 13 years since Matt Reeves's last movie which wasn't based on a big IP.

Greta Gerwig's hot off of Barbie right now and her next two projects are Narnia films......for Netflix. Also, her last original project was 2017's Lady Bird. So it's gonna be a long wait for her next original idea.
