The Santa Clause changes

Been rewatching this trilogy with my son this year and I was wondering is there any info on why the dramatic shift in tone, writing, and aesthetic from movie 1 to 2&3? 2 and 3 feel very similar on this front but in relation to the first, they feel like sequels to a completely different movie. Just curious if anyone knows why this happened the way it did.
