For the scene in "The Shining" when Mrs. Torrance discovers the stack of "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" pages, Kubrick shot 4 other versions of the scene showing the phrase in Spanish, Italian, French and German. He knew the scene suffered if the audience couldn't read the words.
