True Lies is a perfect film.

Every couple of years I pull out True Lies and watch it. And every time I love it. Every aspect is perfectly constructed and it to this day holds up. It’s peak James Cameron. Between this and T2 a couple years earlier, Cameron is in his prime. The casting is brilliant. Every actor is perfect for their role. The dynamic between Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis is perfect. Tom Arnold and the late great Bill Paxton are comedy gold. The structure of the film is actually pretty interesting in that while it does follow an act structure, the use of subplots and side stories while still tying them together is well constructed and seamless. The blend of comedy and action is top notch. The dialog is so well written, and acted. The beats and timing are brilliant and the choice of words are so on the mark, and not cheesy like a lot of Cameron’s later work (looking at you Titanic and Avatar...I still like these movies too. But they can be corny sometimes). In short I think it’s a perfect, fun, entertaining film and while it might not be serious or poignant I think sometimes movies can be perfect without it being some dramatic biopic.
