Why is Chef (2014) so damn good?

The plot is fairly basic. There's no major drama nor tons of comedy. The movie primarily focuses on 3, 4 characters tops. Sofia Vergara's acting (imo) was incredibly flat. The payoff was nice, but nothing special.

The movie is so beyond simple, yet it's so fucking good. It's a movie about a food truck for fucks sake. I mean yea, there's more to the father son and ex-husband ex-wife relationship, but that's not what makes the movie great to me, it's the focus on food that makes it so incredible. Obviously John Favreau is incredibly talented, but such simple movies rarely are so well done. He really struck gold here.
