Background blur in Army of the Dead

I swear to god every single shot has the foreground object/person, and then everything behind it has this terrible blur. Almost like what the world looks like immediately after using eye drops and the water is slightly occluding your vision.

Why would anyone make this design choice? It’s like Snyder only wants me looking at 10% of the shot.
