What happened to SMG's film career once Buffy ended in 2003?

Twenty years ago she was a big star among the teenage/young adult crowd. She had a few hit films like Scooby Doo and Cruel Intentions and The Grudge. Was she typecast when Buffy ended?

I always felt Reese Witherspoon and Drew Barrymore got a bunch of roles that SMG may have been considered for around the early/mid 00s. She turned down Stardust which would have helped her film career immensely.

Surely when Buffy ended in 2003 she must have been free to get some high profile film roles. I recall her being cast in Gangs of New York but dropped out due to scheduling woes with Buffy. So many films she had to turn down due to her commitment on Buffy. Did she foul up by doing Scooby Doo 2 and The Grudge? Should she have tried to go for romantic comedies or playing against type?
