Starting today we will be addressing the current concern that there are too many generic "askreddit" type posts in this subreddit

In the last few months or so, we've been getting a fair amount of meta posts pointing out how this subreddit is increasingly filled with open ended questions like "What's an actor/movie that you have never liked but everyone seems to love?" or something similar.

While these questions have always been a point of contention to the daily users who find them repetitive and often filled with all the same answers, they've also always been a great tool for film recommendations.

However, with the strikes in the industry causing a major stoppage of the upcoming film and casting news that usually is the main focus of this sub, these questions have become a lot more present. And beyond that, we as a team have noticed that they have gotten extremely formulaic and clickbaity.

Clickbait is when the post is presented in a form that's more likely to be clicked when the proper format would be more appropriate. In this case, a lot of people are taking a movie they just watched and posing an open ended question about similar movies, when really they just want to talk about a specific movie in OP. There are countless examples over the last few months or even days.

We believe this recent trend has hurt the overall film discussion in this sub, and based on feedback we believe our daily users feel the same. Posts that should be about one movie are being presented as about every movie, and when every post is about every movie the same movies tend to take over the discourse.

To try and respond to the meta feedback that this is hurting the subreddit, we've decided to temporarily add a rule inspired by /r/AskReddit. The rule:

If you're submitting an open ended question, please do not provide your own answer in OP

The hope is that those still looking for recommendations can elaborate on what they're looking for, and those who want to talk about a certain movie and form a question around that movie are encouraged to just make a post about that movie with a title that states the opinion rather than asks and answers its own question.

We will be tracking the success/feedback of this rule for the next month or so and will continue to do what we feel is right for the subreddit based on your feedback and our constant monitoring.
